Electrical apprenticeship wanted

Hi all,

After looking at (re)-training and apprenticeships I was amazed to see that there are none available in Devon in the electrical industries. Actually in very few industries! www.apprenticeshipguide.co.uk/ The only thing was a substation engineer but I would have to live away to learn which is out of the question. Looking into the ICT industry there is only a comms engineer with the Navy which is also out of the question as I'd be out at sea like John! Of course the other thing that these have in common (especially the Navy post) is that they are aimed at school leavers.

I have sent the Journal a letter asking them to do a small piece on the lack of apprenticehips locally and also my plea for one.

I can't look at full time education as that doesn't pay the mortgage. Distance learning is also out of the question as I can't afford it! So if there are no apprenticeships then I'm screwed.

Lee

Hi Lee, I put this thread in blog as it's not really amateur radio!

Trouble you will have as an adult looking for training is the employer will have to pay minimum wage....
ie. You cost more then a school leaver!

Point taken though, there is a lack of work in the area and the last this an employer wants is trainees when that are laying off!

Have you contacted the college to see what they have to offer, at least do a H&S/First Aid and a CSCS card course while you are unemployed?
These will help you get a job in the construction industry.

IF you're unemployed the job centre will pay for you to do the CSCS card course (u need that to go near building sites). They can also put you through the SIA course (think Green Lanes SAS-wannabe) AND pay the first year licence fee (what I hope to be doing in a couple of weeks). The SIA thing is run @ NDC/petrock.

Or there's the Army/Navy/RAF ??? (my back up plan if current career prospects go wrong!!!)

Not at the moment. I put myself down for the SIA one. I think I could easily do a job walking around warehouses at night and watching cctv, Demonic Toys style...

It may be worth asking the job centre about apprenticeships, free courses etc. If anyone knows about it they should do.

I'm not unemployed anymore. I can't afford to be. The CSCS card maybe something to look at as it will obviously be of benefit. Journal have got back to me and they will run smething next week. In the meantime they are looking for emplyers in the area that offer them in order to make a story out of it so something may come of that.

Sorry I posted in the main section - not quite sure why I did that.....

It might be worth writing to some Electrical Contracting companies Lee
My company took 2 Electrical Apprentices on after letters arrived from them out of the blue,we had not been advertising, but we were more than happy to take them on.
Having said that they were both school leavers at the time.
In my experience ,if a letter arrives on someones desk at just the right time it can be quite surprising what is out there.

Ha ha, shame the Mic doesn't work! I recon it's probably the little capacitor going across the mic insert terminals.

I think you can join the Navy up to 40ish years old now, used to be 32 years old. But Im not 100% on that.
Pay you and train you, I think the basic pay is around £14K to £18K, again Im not sure.
In three years time I will also be looking for a job, 27 years done! Then thats me.
John.
