British Telecom What Ive been asking myself for the last month of my dispute with them is "How can a communications company be so bad at communications"I notice customers are deserting them in droves, and if you have ever had to talk to them its not hard to see why! Im about to enter the murky world of broadband suppliers, because Ive decided BT are never going to get another penny out of me,and its a dodgy world full of small print like this: "This package comes with an unlimited download limit which may restrict the amount you can download via your internet connection." Errr so what you mean is,its not unlimited ;-) Sometimes the only thing companies like BT understand is disconnection! Rant over

Yes BT are rubbish! interesting small print. I gather Ofcom (peace be with it..) have now introduced a code of practice about how ISP's are allowed to market their services with regard to statements like that. I wonder what BT have to say about these guidelines? |

I think its pretty scandalous how ISPs carry on generally. Take internet speeds for example......BT will be very quick indeed to tell you you are under contract, but a contract works both ways, however getting them to keep their side of the contract is hopeless, because they have it all covered in the very small print, something like, "We can do what we want" I notice that some report or other (Probably which magazine)mentioned that a very large number of ISP customers do not get what they should according to contract..... So who do you complain to ? OFCOM dont deal with individual complaints so who does that leave. No wonder the likes of BT and of course others get away with it, you only have to look as far as the homeplug situation to realise their contempt for complaints. Although, as BT have just tried to charge me £189 to put right their own poor workmanship I may be just a tad biased

I tried to cancel my BT line before Christmas because I have signed up for unlimited 24/7 calls UK and 20 countries + unlimited internet from Tiscali. BT keep failing to install Tiscalis equipment on time so my next 'date' is the 12th of Feb. I have had nothing but large bills and crap service from BT for too many years.

Glad Im not the only one Paul BT are the mouse in charge of the cheese cupboard, and thats the bottom line. I was going to move to Plusnet....but find they are owned by BT..my poor experience with Orange was on lines provided by BT...your move to Tiscali....dictated by BT... Im now looking at moving to the Post Office, but I would put money on BT being involved somewhere. Of course BT have a vested interest in making sure other companies appear to provide poor service....hence the glossy ads running a year or so back about "More customers are returning to BT" Of course it should of added "Because they have no choice" Deregulation gives us choice? I dont think so |

A funny thing happened today.Despite 7 different people telling me that there was nothing that could be done and that I would have to pay,I get a phone call out of the blue, with no explanation telling me that I would not have to pay. Strangely enough this happened after a copy of my letter to the local MP detailing the great BT master socket scam arrived at BT Head office. Now whilst Im very happy that I dont have to pay this extortionate charge,I cant help but think this is all a bit of a coincidence. And Im also wondering how many other people who are perhaps not quite as vociferous as myself, are paying up due to the BT "You have to pay and thats that" tactics. |

I finally got shot of BT, with Tiscali now for the whole package. Broadband is a tad quicker, phone is fine, calls are free, the sky is blue....

I can only compare Tiscali to me Demon account... Demon 'was' the mutts nuts before Thus and lately cable and wireless takeovers. It's flat average now with foreign tech support which is crap and slower speeds day by day. Tiscali has been 'slightly' faster to load web pages but their connection speeds reads 1 meg here compared to Demons 1.5 meg, I suppose their cashe server is better.... Just my 2p worth! ---------------------- |

I'm on Tiscalli and get 4.5 meg here. Occasionally the speed will drop but turning the router off and then back on rectifies that problem. |

Well, out in the sticks here we get about 4016 kB/s. That is, 4016 kilo BITS per second, not BYTES. It works out at about 502 Bytes per second, or half a 'Meg', as they like to call it. Not the 'up to 8 meg'(?) they quoted
Talking of bt, an interesting Link for those who have not seen it. uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20090302/tuk-pensioner-slams-bt-over-100-charge-dba1618.html |

The maximum speed you can get is determined by the maximum speed your local telephone exchange can handle. You can check the speed of your local exchanged using any of the links below. If you are getting less than 75% of the speed stated for your area then you need to start kicking your ISP and/or BT's arse. When i first had broadband down here in Devon i suffered terrible speed losses which i later found out was due to a fault at the local exchange. I never had all this aggro before i moved down here because where i used to live i was using a fibre optic cable network. freeola.com/broadband/broadband-speed-availability-check.php www.broadband-finder.co.uk/broadband-tools/line-check.html www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=16738 |

What happens a lot round here is that exchanges are a hell of a long way from you. Just look for example at the size of the area covered by the Lynton area code, it is truly massive! Many villages don't have their own exchange so copper connections are much longer resulting in low gain signal and hence narrower bandwidth to outlying areas. I have had BT openreach here testing for faults, the overheads were replaced a couple of years ago, it makes no difference what so ever, I'm to far from the exchange to get good gain.... Greg is 'much' further from the exchange then I am resulting in very poor gain as well. Point to note, when using a broadband speed checker you are also using your own house wiring 'and' in most cases a router. As I have been playing with routers a bit of late I did some experiments and found there to be a big difference in connection speed depending on your router. Older chipsets will simply not work at higher speeds so it's worth bearing that in mind. If your connection is slow also try unplugging your phone master point and plugging in your modem/router to the hidden socket behind the front plate. This will disconnect all your house wiring and connect you directly to BT's cable thereby possibly showing up a fault in your own house phone cables. All good fun! Not. ---------------------- |

Well, I just have a mobile dongle from 3. I have full signal which should be 3600[u]M[u/]bps. The highest I have had is 900Kbps! That is if the page actually loads. When the Cell is busy NOTHING HAPPENS!!!!! and even this site times out! All for £33.00 per month. Good huh? Lee |

There are 3 of us using '3' dongles in work. No matter where we work they always show a 3.6Mb connection. It's total bollocks. I've done a few speed tests using www.speedtest.net and the actual speed varies depending on location and time of day. Best I've had is around 1Mb, worst around 100kb. No signal at all where I live. Just tried a speed test on my home adsl. Just under 1/2Mb dload. I was told that due to the distance from the exchange it's about all I could expect. ---------------------- |
